Sr Civil Designer (CAD)

Job Description

The Senior Civil Designer (CAD) is responsible for preparing, reviewing, and coordinating detailed civil engineering drawings and construction documents for a variety of land development, transportation, utility, drainage, and infrastructure projects. This position serves as a technical resource for project teams, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with company standards, client requirements, and applicable regulatory criteria.  The ideal candidate possesses advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, strong knowledge of civil engineering design principles, and the ability to work independently while supporting engineers, project managers, and junior CAD staff.   Desired experience is 7-15+ years in civil engineering design and drafting, with significant experience in land development and infrastructure projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Production

  • Prepare detailed civil engineering plans and construction documents utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Develop and maintain existing conditions plans, site plans, grading plans, drainage plans, utility plans, roadway plans, erosion control plans, and paving plans.
  • Create and manage Civil 3D surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, pipe networks, and grading models.
  • Generate construction details, plan sheets, exhibits, reports, and permit application graphics.
  • Perform quality control reviews of plans and drawings prior to submittal.
  • Coordinate plan revisions and updates throughout project development.

   Project Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, surveyors, and permitting agencies.
  • Assist project teams in meeting schedules, budgets, and client expectations.
  • Coordinate drawing standards and CAD workflows across multiple projects.
  • Provide technical support during design development and construction phases.
  • Assist in resolving drafting and design-related challenges.

   Leadership and Mentorship

  • Train and mentor junior and mid-level CAD technicians.
  • Review work completed by drafting staff for accuracy and compliance with company standards.
  • Promote best practices for CAD production, file organization, and quality assurance.
  • Assist with developing, maintaining, and improving CAD standards and templates.

   Quality Assurance

  • Verify that drawings comply with project specifications, engineering standards, local development codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain consistency in layering, annotation, sheet layout, and project documentation.
  • Conduct thorough internal quality reviews before project deliverables are issued.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Drafting, Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of CAD drafting experience in civil engineering or land development.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering construction plans and design concepts.
  • Experience preparing plans for residential, commercial, industrial, and mixed-use developments.
  • Ability to read and interpret surveys, engineering reports, geotechnical data, and permitting requirements.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Valid driver's license.

Civil Designer (CAD)

Job Description

The Civil Designer (CAD) provides drafting and design support for civil engineering projects involving land development, roadways, utilities, drainage, and infrastructure improvements. Working under the supervision of project engineers and senior designers, this role assists in preparing construction drawings, exhibits, permit documents, and technical plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software. This position is ideal for a motivated individual seeking to build a career in civil engineering design and drafting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and modify engineering drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Assist with the development of site plans, grading plans, utility plans, roadway plans, and drainage plans.
  • Create and maintain project exhibits, figures, and presentation graphics.
  • Support the preparation of construction plans, permit applications, and record drawings.
  • Organize and manage CAD files, project documentation, and electronic drawing databases.
  • Assist with importing survey data and creating existing conditions base maps.
  • Produce quantity takeoffs and plan sheet layouts as directed.
  • Apply company drafting standards, CAD standards, and quality control procedures.
  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, surveyors, and project managers to ensure drawing accuracy.
  • Make revisions based on redline markups and review comments.
  • Participate in project meetings and internal training programs.
  • Maintain project schedules and meet assigned deadlines.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or coursework in CAD Drafting, Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • 0-3 years of CAD drafting experience.
  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow established drafting standards and procedures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
